Alaska: Part 2

It was already bedtime at home by the time we were off the boat, so we FaceTimed the kids before hoping back in the car.  They had a great first day at summer Adventure Club.
I was this gorgeous spot on the way back to Anchorage and am so glad I stopped to capture it.
Even our car looked great here.  We had a Volkswagen Jetta that got 46 mpg.  Hard to be mad at that, especially considering we drove nearly 700 miles.
We tried to eat at a popular pizza place, but it was over an hour wait and already 8:00, so we went to a nearby sushi spot instead.  Sushi Ya had a super cute atmosphere.  We are pretty tame in our tastes for this so we shared some vegetable tempura, golden crunch roll, and Nevada roll.  The miso soup was not to my liking, but the salad was good.
It was so strange to see the sun out late.  This was at 10:30pm from our room.
We struck out again the next working with a long wait at our restaurant of choice.  We hit up Moose a la Mode for a quick bite.
Next up was a bike ride on the coastal trail.  It's 22 miles round trip, but we just went out 5 miles and back 5 miles.  The scenery was gorgeous and we were able to watch planes land and take off during our halfway break.
We saw several sandhill cranes on our ride.  This was extra fun since they get their name from the sandhills in Nebraska.  I know I have heard my grandma talk about them, so we will have to chat the next time we visit.
Here is a video of our ride, including a cargo plane we got to see take off.
We went back to Moose's Tooth for lunch and the wait was much less.
Jimmy got a salad, I was craving some chips and salsa, and we split a slice of the day (Avalanche).  Who knew you needed to go to a pizza shop in Alaska to find the best salsa ever?!?!
Tuesday was a flexible day.  We originally planned to do this Wednesday, but it was going to be overcast and possibly rainy.  There is a fancy ski resort about an hour south with a mountaintop tram.
We had seen a lot of snow capped mountains, so it was fun to be n the actual snow.  Probably the first time we've been in snow in June.
This was another of the most scenic spots on our trip.  I am so glad we made sure to get up here on a sunny day.  They also had a gift shop and restaurant up there.
We headed back to the hotel for a rest (nap for me.) Then, we walked over to the mall to check out the Apple Store.  It's been a while since we've visited because of Covid, so there were a lot of new things for Jimmy to check out.  It was about an hour before closing and we ended up being the only people in there.  One of the employees said it always clears out at the end of the day.
We spotted Fat Ptarmigan on our walk back and stopped for a hard cider flight and appetizer. You may recall our cider taste test from last year.  We've got pretty experienced palettes from that and all of these seems to fall a little flat and lacked flavor. It was still fun to try something new, and the spinach artichoke dip was delicious.
Wild Scoops was just around the corner, and well worth the wait.  We hit the magical time of 9:05 while in line.  The latest the sun sets at home is 9:04, so Jimmy wanted to make sure to document how light out it was.  We shared a baked alaska cone.  Salted caramel ice cream in a waffle cone, topped with toasted marshmallow.  We should have gone back the next night...
